This newsletter is free to read, and it’ll stay that way. But if you want more - extra posts each month, access to the community, and a direct line to ask me things - paid subscriptions are $2.50/month. A lot of people have told me it’s worth it.
Andreessen’s just espousing the “More Everything Forever” mindset that Becker destroys (along with the Technological Salvation myth) in his book of the same name. The synthetic notion of growth-is-all-that-matters smells delicious but has no nutritional value.
I do think there is difference between obsessive navel-gazing and introspection. As you mentioned Joan, introspection is healthy e.g. Socrates. But navel-gazing and obsessive self-absorption are different things. I wondered when I heard Marc state this if he actually was talking the therapising of the culture. Which as someone in recovery for the past ten years and having sat in more recovery rooms than I care to admit, I see a lot of. The healthy individuals, check in with themselves (introspection), the folks who keep relapsing or play perpetual victim seem to be the ones who obsessively navel-gaze. Maybe navel-gazing is not the most kind of terms to use, but hopefully you get my gist.
I get where you’re coming from - and I’m not sure I’d disagree with Marc, if that were the point he made. But his hours // days long crash out on Twitter I think made it clear that a lack of introspection was certainly at work…
It might even be that he felt “above” the need to set the record straight. But either way, it wasn’t fantastic…
