Hi, I’m from Melbourne Australia and a I’m very concerned about what’s happening in international and local politics at the moment and I have a fairly informed opinions about many things. I’m new to Discourse and keen to see what it has to offer.

Good to have you! I’m a big Discourse fan. I miss forums, and I want to bring them back.

Evening. I’m new to Discourse too. I’m not entirely ā€˜convinced’ I need to learn another social media platform, but was attracted by the prospect of civilized (sic) discourse.

I’m based in Central Queensland and am heavily involved in social equity issues. We’re one of the few electorates to vote a most resounding ā€œno" in the last referendum, so to say it’s ā€˜redneck’ is a slight understatement.

I’ve been mightily impressed by everything Westenberg :slightly_smiling_face:, so keen to hear more.

Hi there! I’m Karol from Poland (Pomerania province, near Gdańsk). I’m co-founder of small boutique content marketing team working on Polish market (although this term, co-founder, seems strange to me — I was just first to pitch this idea to people that are working with me now). Been in SEO industry for last 6 year. Hating it. Content marketing is better — slightly, but better.

Privately — love archaeology (my Bachelor Degree), cultural anthropology (my Masters degree), Hegel (no degree, just liking to read PoS before going to bed). I have a wife, newborn daughter and 3 cats. I’m rather laid back, I think. I play on upright bass and electric bass, but enjoy also guitar and appalachian dulcimer. I’m really into bluegrass, country, Americana and folk music, but from time to time I still like to enjoy some sludge metal. Yeah, I think this sums me up.

I’m a lost soul that revivified when I heard forums still exist. Hopelessly addicted to new information and being curious and all the things that may lead to depression in the modern age

Hello,

Glad to be here, I am from Europe.
I appreciate the insights you are giving regularly on several subjects and I look forward reading/participating in discussions on discourse.
On a personal note, I am quite interested in Web3 topics and so I am following the ecosystem developments.

Thanks for the invitation. I have an on-and-off relationship with Discourse communities. But I have the feeling this one, can be one that I enjoy participating in. I love to have some insightful discussions about your content with like-minded people. I am from Europe, so I have a strong interest into things that are important to use like digital sovereignty, data privacy and fighting climate change. But initially, I subscribed because of a post about digital detoxing.

Web3 is in such a weird place, hey.

Following everything along on Farcaster. But so much of it feels like it’s in a liminal space.

I hope so! I haven’t run a forum in years. It’s all been Discourse servers. But I’m hoping the async is going to be…calmer. Smoother.

Computers, Corgis, and Coffee. I’m a techie, having spend 18 years writing software at Microsoft ('83-'01, or as I call them, the golden years), and have been running tech Q&A site Ask Leo! since 2003. I also publish too many newsletters, including 7 Takeaways, Not All News is Bad, and Heroic Stories. I volunteer for the Washington State Animal Response Team (WASART) in a variety of roles, and I’m an amateur radio operator (N7LEO). My wife of 45 years puts up with all of that, for which I’m eternally grateful. We have three Corgis, and host the annual Pacific Northwest Corgi picnic, which just had it’s 21st.

That’s what I put in my profile here. As someone else commented I’m impressed by all things Westenberg and that’s that path that landed me here. A few years ago I decided I need to consume better quality info, and since apparently it takes a commitment to publishing a newsletter to make me do that I started 7 Takeaways. It’s in my reading for that that I encountered Joan and the incredibly thoughtful peices she produces. Yes, I live in the US, and I often find myself apologizing to my overseas relatives (all blood relatives are in The Netherlands) for what it’s become. I don’t understand it either, but I keep looking for ways to make a difference from my little corner of the digital world. I try to have hope.

Looking forward to safe and thoughtful discussions.

Hi from MontrĆ©al, QuĆ©bec. I’ve spent the last 20+ years in tech startups (trained as an engineer so mostly in product/engineering founding roles) with the latest role being leading Techstars MontrĆ©al AI. Since last year, I decided to step out of that industry and go study cognitive neuroscience full time. Love reading your posts/newsletters and how they challenge typical thinking, you clearly put a lot of thought behind those.

hi- Collin, here. A lurker by nature but intrigued enough to post an introduction of sorts. Like probably everyone, I’m curious to see how this experiment evolves and already like vibescape.

I’m still a little bummed that the ā€œthe indexā€ group on lemmy is so quiet- definitely want the fediverse to be more than what it (currently) is.

Hi there!

I’m Nicola from Italy and a long time lurker myself. I loved ā€œthe internetā€ (yes, that little black box from the IT Crowd episode) from the start but I’m struggling nowadays to navigate a place where everyone has to say something about everything. That’s what resonates with me about what Joan is doing: a slower pace world where there’s no truthā„¢ to be learned at once, but a constant (but fruitful) struggle.
Honestly: I asked myself over time if that kind of content is just narrowing further my view, as I already agree with mostly everything Joan wrote. But then I noticed that what I get the most from it is not about reinforcing my believes (okay, maybe a little), but about reasoning about why I believe and feel those things in the first place.

And now I’m very happy to lurk some more on discourse as well!

Hey gang, I’m Cory.

I live in Melbourne, Australia. I’m a copywriter by trade and have spent 10+ years being mildly amusing online for media outlets, libraries and corporates. Outside of work, I write stuff, play too much sport for a guy in his late 30s, and collect hobbies like PokĆ©mon cards (currently: learning Japanese, making Gundam models, tinkering with self-hosting a bunch of things, learning how to paint digitally and how to take better photos, and I’m thinking about taking up skateboarding because I’m apparently really committed to tearing an ACL).

Discourse seems really cool! It’s hitting a real forum nostalgia from my shithead teen years. Just need to get MSN Messenger back up and running to really hit.

Discourse is awesome. it’s genuinely just…a return to slower community.

And I think we ned that.

I don’t know about you folks, but I am exhausted by group chats and notifications and everything else.

Good to be here, nice with a real forum for a change.

Swedish web aficionado living in Stockholm. Two teenage kids.

Have been deep into social and news media but have detoxified (after reading some of Cal Newports stuff) and now my brain is back, parts of it anyway.

Very interested in framing and the shaping of political ideas. Have read everything by George Lakoff.

Just started a business selling solar panels and battery storage.

I should read more of Cal Newport’s work. I read digital minimalism and thoroughly enjoyed it, but I haven’t gone deeper into his blog etc.

Adding to my neverending list…!

Hello from the Pacific Northwest. My name is Greg and I wear many hats, and spend a lot of my time these days writing at Brilliantcrank. I’m mostly focused on calling out bullshit and doing what I can to give people inspiration, direction, and permission to stand up for themselves. Joan, you’re an inspiration and I love what you’re doing personally and professionally to show people the way. So I’m here to be a part of the conversation.

Like many of you, I’m happy this is a BBS and not another chat room.
